Le Labo Santal 33 – partly responsible for the current musk obsession. The sandalwood and cedar backbone is built on a musk base that makes the whole thing smell like a memory of warm skin. Overexposed, but still excellent.

État Libre d’Orange Putain des Palaces – ambery musk with a warm, animalistic edge. Translates roughly as “hotel hooker.” More sophisticated than that name suggests; the musk accord is genuinely fine rather than crude.

What to try as decants before buying

Musk fragrances are worth sampling before committing to full bottles because they behave unpredictably on different skin chemistries.
