If you want to buy or sell fragrance decants, you have several options. They’ve all been around for years and all work — with different tradeoffs. Here’s an honest comparison so you can decide what fits your situation.

r/fragranceswap (Reddit)

The original home of decant trading in the English-speaking fragrance community. The community is real, the participants are knowledgeable, and the culture around it has developed strong norms.

What works:

• High community trust within the sub. Regular sellers accumulate trade history, and the community self-polices pretty effectively
• Access to rare and vintage material. Serious collectors participate, and you see things here that don’t appear on commercial platforms
• No listing fees. The platform is free for both buyers and sellers
• Good for niche requests — if you’re looking for something specific, a WTB (want to buy) post often turns up a match from someone who has it

What doesn’t work:

• No payment protection. Transactions happen via Venmo, PayPal Friends & Family, or similar — which means disputes are hard to resolve
• Search is terrible. Reddit’s search function is not built for marketplace discovery; finding specific listings requires effort
• No seller profiles or ratings system. Trust is accumulated via post history and community vouching, which takes time to establish and is hard to evaluate as a new buyer
• Transactions are slow. Negotiating via DM, confirming availability, exchanging payment info — it works but takes longer than a structured platform

Best for: Experienced community members who already have trade history, rare material hunting, and buyers who know the community signals.

Facebook Groups

Multiple large Facebook groups facilitate fragrance swaps and decant sales. Some are well-moderated; some are chaotic.

What works:

• Large audience. The biggest groups have tens of thousands of members, which means more potential buyers or sellers for any given fragrance
• Mobile-friendly. If you primarily use your phone, Facebook’s interface for this is easier than Reddit
• Photos embedded in listings make the quality of the source bottle visible

What doesn’t work:

• Algorithm-driven feeds. Your listing disappears into the feed after a few hours unless it gets interaction. Finding old listings is difficult
• Moderation varies wildly. Some groups are well-run; others have issues with scammers and dispute resolution is inconsistent
• Privacy concerns. Sharing your address and transaction details via Facebook DM is not something everyone is comfortable with
• No search by fragrance name across the group history. Discovery is basically impossible unless you post asking

Best for: People with existing Facebook presence in the community. Not great for discovery or building a reliable seller presence.

Direct DMs and Discord

Many collectors do their trading entirely through fragrance Discord servers or direct DMs with people they already know from forums.

What works:

• Personal relationship = high trust. If you’ve talked to someone on Basenotes for three years, you know them well enough to transact directly
• No overhead. No fees, no middlemen, no platform rules
• Can handle unusual requests and custom splits more easily

What doesn’t work:

• Zero discoverability. You can only transact with people you already know
• No buyer protection of any kind
• Doesn’t scale. If you’re trying to build a decanting operation, one-off DMs are inefficient

Best for: Established community members with a known personal network. Not useful for anyone new.

Dedicated Marketplaces (Fraghead)

Fraghead is built specifically for fragrance collector-to-buyer transactions. The structure is closer to Etsy or Depop than Reddit — a proper marketplace with listings, profiles, and transaction infrastructure.

What works:

• Payment infrastructure is handled. No Venmo negotiation; the transaction happens on-platform
• Wishlist and collection import from Fragrantica. Your buying intent is surfaced to sellers with relevant inventory

What doesn’t work:

• Smaller community than Reddit at this stage. If you’re looking for something extremely obscure, the inventory may not be there yet
• Platform fees. As with any marketplace, there’s a fee structure that Reddit doesn’t have

Best for: Anyone who wants a reliable, structured way to buy or sell decants without the friction of community marketplaces. Especially useful for newer collectors who haven’t built a Reddit trade history yet.

The Honest Summary

Most serious collectors use multiple channels. Reddit for community hunting and rare material; Fraghead for reliable, structured transactions where the overhead of community negotiation isn’t worth it.

If you’re new to decant buying or selling, starting on a structured platform makes more sense than navigating the community dynamics of Reddit as an unknown participant. If you’re an experienced community member with an established trade history, Reddit still has value for the rare stuff.
