Fragrance Performance Explained: Sillage, Projection, and Longevity

Sillage, projection, and longevity are the three axes of fragrance performance. Here is what each means, what drives it, and why marketing claims rarely match reality.

Fragrance reviews use a vocabulary that most buyers never fully untangle. Sillage, projection, longevity, throw, beast mode, skin scent: these terms describe real and measurable qualities, but they are applied inconsistently across reviewers, and the marketing claims attached to fragrances bear no reliable relationship to any of them.

This article covers the three performance metrics that actually matter, what drives each of them, and how to calibrate your expectations against what you will read on review sites and smell on your wrist.

The Three Terms

Sillage

Sillage (pronounced see-YAHZH) is French for “wake” - the trail left by a boat in water. In fragrance, it refers to the scent you leave behind as you move: in a corridor you walked through, in a seat you vacated, in a room you passed through briefly.

If someone smells your fragrance after you have left the room, that is sillage working. If no one notices your fragrance until they are close enough to shake your hand, that is low sillage.

Projection

Projection describes how far a fragrance radiates outward from your body. A fragrance with strong projection fills the airspace immediately around you - an arm’s length in every direction - and is perceptible to others without close contact. A fragrance with modest projection stays close to the skin and is only detectable within a few inches.

The two qualities are related but distinct. A fragrance can project strongly for the first two hours and then drop to a skin scent that leaves significant sillage on fabric for the rest of the day. Some fragrances maintain modest projection throughout but linger on clothing for 24 hours. Neither pattern is better; they suit different purposes.

Longevity

Longevity is the simplest concept of the three and the most abused in marketing copy. It is simply how long a fragrance remains perceptible after application.

The industry standard for longevity claims is almost meaningless. “All-day wear” on a bottle could mean six hours on your skin type or twelve. Skin chemistry, application technique, concentration, and the specific aromatic materials all affect longevity more than the number of hours printed anywhere.

What Actually Controls Longevity

Molecular weight and volatility

Fragrance notes are classified partly by how quickly they evaporate. Top notes - citrus materials like bergamot, lemon, and grapefruit; green herbs like basil and galbanum; light aldehydes - have low molecular weight and evaporate fast. They are detectable for twenty minutes to an hour.

Heart notes - florals, spice, soft woods - are mid-weight. They develop as the top notes fade and last from one to three hours depending on concentration.

Base notes - musks, ambers, resins, vetiver, benzoin, labdanum, patchouli - are heavy molecules. They do not evaporate quickly. A quality musk base on the right skin can be detectable 12 to 24 hours later.

Fragrances heavy in base materials last longer. A citrus cologne that is almost entirely top notes will be gone in two hours regardless of what the bottle says. A rich amber oriental will persist through the night.

Concentration

Eau de Cologne (2-5% aromatic concentration) and Eau de Toilette (5-15%) contain less aromatic material than Eau de Parfum (15-20%) or Extrait de Parfum (20-40%). More material means longer wear - in theory.

In practice, concentration affects character as much as longevity. An EDT and an EDP from the same house in the same fragrance can smell like different fragrances: the additional concentration amplifies some materials more than others, changes the balance, and alters what you perceive first. Skin chemistry and hydration

Skin pH affects how aromatic molecules bind and evaporate. Oily skin tends to hold fragrance longer; dry skin lets it evaporate faster. This is not a minor variable. The same fragrance on two people with different skin types can perform differently by two to four hours of longevity.

Hydration helps. Applying fragrance over unscented moisturiser creates a layer that slows evaporation. This is the easiest practical technique for extending longevity that actually works - not layering two fragrances or applying to hair, both of which change the fragrance’s character. Just basic skin hydration under the application points.

Application technique

Apply to pulse points - inside wrists, base of throat, inside the elbows, behind the knees. These are warm areas where blood vessels run close to the skin surface; warmth drives evaporation and projection.

Do not rub the fragrance in after applying. Rubbing breaks down the top notes before they develop and disrupts the layered architecture of the composition. Spray and leave it.

Applying to clothing extends longevity significantly - fabric holds fragrance molecules better than skin. The trade-off is that clothing cannot replicate the warmth and skin chemistry interaction that makes fragrance interesting. Apply to skin for the full experience; apply to fabric if persistence is the priority.

The Marketing Claims Problem

Fragrance marketing longevity claims are optimistic at best and fabricated at worst. A few specific patterns to distrust:

“12-hour longevity” - Almost nothing achieves 12 detectable hours on skin for most people, regardless of concentration or price. This number typically comes from lab testing on paper strips, not on human wearers, or from the most favourable skin type in a small sample. On real skin, six to eight hours for a quality EDP is a realistic benchmark for a well-performing fragrance.

“Beast mode” reviewer claims - Fragrance review culture has an inflation problem. Reviewers who describe themselves as requiring X hours longevity for any fragrance worth recommending create a bias toward heavy, dense compositions that happen to have excellent molecular persistence. The implicit claim is that longevity equals quality. It does not. Creed Aventus, which routinely gets described as the ultimate fragrance by the same community, has mediocre-to-good longevity on most skin types. L’Heure Bleue by Guerlain barely projects. Both are extraordinary fragrances.

“Compliment monster” - This describes sillage, not quality. A fragrance that generates comments from strangers across a room is projecting aggressively. That can be wonderful or it can be inappropriate, depending on context. Aggression is not a virtue by default.

Realistic Benchmarks by Category

These are realistic expectations, not aspirational ones. Individual batches, reformulations, and skin types vary.

Citrus / fresh / aquatic EDTs - 2 to 4 hours. These compositions are top-note-heavy by design. They are not underperforming; they are working correctly. Wearing a quality citrus in its short window is a different experience than extending something heavier past its natural arc.

Floral EDPs - 4 to 8 hours, typically with moderate projection. Florals developed over white musks tend to persist longer; those built on fresh top notes fade faster.

Woody aromatic EDPs - 6 to 10 hours. Vetiver, sandalwood, cedar, and oakmoss base materials have good molecular persistence.

Oriental / amber EDPs and Extraits - 8 to 16 hours, with excellent sillage on fabric. These are the longest-performing category, built around the heaviest aromatic materials.

Oud-heavy compositions - Highly variable depending on whether the oud is synthetic or real. Real agarwood-based compositions can persist for 24 hours or beyond. Synthetic oud accords often fade with the rest of the mid-weight materials, landing in the 6 to 10 hour range.

Performance vs Appropriateness

High performance is not always what you want. A fragrance with aggressive projection and 12-hour longevity is the wrong fragrance for a small office, an enclosed meeting, or a dinner where you will be in close contact with people who may have fragrance sensitivities.

Part of developing a fragrance collection is understanding which fragrances project and which stay close, which trail and which fade cleanly, and choosing accordingly. A skin scent worn to a close dinner is not inferior to a beast-mode oriental worn to an open-air event. They are different tools for different contexts.

The best performers across sillage, projection, and longevity are also often the fragrances that require the most careful context management: Amouage Interlude, Tom Ford Tobacco Vanille, Angel by Mugler, Dior Poison.
