Giorgio Armani produces some of the most commercially successful fragrances in the world. Acqua di Gio has been in the global top ten sellers for almost thirty years. The current formulation is weaker than early releases - performance is around 4-6 hours and projection is moderate. But the smell itself remains excellent: clean without being generic, marine without being literal seawater. If you haven’t tried it recently, re-test; the familiarity makes people dismiss it too quickly.

Best for: Office, warm weather, year-round. An essential wardrobe component.

Acqua di Gio Profumo (2015)

The upgrade. Profumo adds an incense note to the Acqua di Gio structure, giving it depth and projection that the original EdT doesn’t have. The incense reads smoky without being heavy - it creates a warm, slightly mysterious quality that transforms the clean aquatic opening into something more complex by the drydown.

Performance is significantly better than the EdT: 8-10 hours on skin, excellent projection for the first 3-4 hours.

Best for: All-season, office, evening. The best aquatic masculine at the designer price point.

Acqua di Gio Absolu (2018)

A different approach from Profumo. Where Profumo adds incense, Absolu adds a richer, woodier texture - less smoky, more polished. If you find Profumo’s incense character too heavy for casual wear, Absolu is the intermediate option. The performance matches Profumo.

Verdict: Excellent but not necessary if you own Profumo. Pick one.

Armani Code EdT (2004)

A shift from the Acqua di Gio aesthetic toward warm, sensual, and slightly sweet. Bergamot over olive blossom and guaiac wood with a tonka-and-lemon base. Code is the masculine fragrance designed to be noticed at close range - it’s not a sillage bomb but it performs beautifully for intimate distances.

One of the better masculine fragrances at accessible prices if you wear it in appropriate contexts (evening, dates, close-contact settings). Less effective as an office or daytime fragrance.

The richer flanker. Vanilla, amber, and patchouli over the base of the original. A legitimate upgrade if you want more depth - the patchouli anchors the sweetness better than in the standard version. This is the one fragrance communities typically recommend over the original.

The Women’s Line

Si EdP (2013)

Blackcurrant and rose over patchouli and ambergris. Si has a distinctive opening note - the blackcurrant reads sharp and almost effervescent before settling into a warm, refined base. It’s one of the best modern women’s fragrances that succeeds in being both fresh and substantive.

Performance is good but not exceptional: 6-8 hours on skin, moderate projection.
